The popular view of students reared in poverty is that they fall short across a wide range of domains relative to their more advantaged peers. In this ongoing longitudinal study, we follow a cohort of college students who come from poverty and were awarded full financial support for four years at a large public research university. The results after two full academic years are striking for the lack of difference in dropout rate and grade point average between these economically disadvantaged students and their college peers.

From the abstract: "This survey study examined the learning strategy recommendations and endorsements made by heads of academic support centers at 77 institutions of higher education. …The results present mixed evidence for the endorsement of strategies most likely to support student success, highlighting an opportunity to improve the communication between researchers and those on the front lines of student academic support."

Using a Tobit model, this study found "that peer tutoring does indeed produce a positive effect on student learning outcomes. For this effect to translate into an increase in a student’s letter grade in a particular course, though, the results suggest that it is necessary to engage in the activity for…something akin to an hour per week" (p. 281-282).

"when compared to No tutoring, the effect sizes of answer-based tutoring systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and adult human tutors are believed to be d = 0.3, 1.0, and 2.0 respectively. This review did not confirm these beliefs. Instead, it found that the effect size of human tutoring was much lower: d = 0.79. Moreover, the effect size of intelligent tutoring systems was 0.76, so they are nearly as effective as human tutoring" (p. 197).
